TRIBAL SYMBOL PROCESS

We focused more on our group as a tribe, for our major assessment. As a group of four, we brainstormed our passions, things we like, our values etc. So we created a mind map, then a paragraph from the mind map, a sentence, one word and a symbol that describes what we stand for.

photo of me and my mum in traditional attire
The left of the picture,i have always worn a gold and tulsi(basil plant) necklace called kanthi around my neck, because of my hindu religion. The kanthi is a double stranded necklace made of wooden beads from the tulsi plant. Tulsi is said to be a sacred plant. When someone places a kanthi around their neck, they take the vows of the religion and swear by their own necks to abide by the regulations.According to the Hindu scriptures, Lord Swaminarayan commanded every devotee to wear one. to symbolize the union between The Lord and the devotee.
My mother, on the right, wears a mangalsutra necklace, black and gold beads. Mangalsutra is the token of dignity and love given to a bride by her groom. On the wedding day, the groom ties the Mangalsutra around the neck of the bride, while the priest recites Vedic hymns and prays. It signifies the union of the bride and the groom, amidst the presence of deities, who are believed to be attending the marriage

Symbol 3: Sindur (red dot)

A married indian woman has to put the red sindur(red dot) on her forehead. Sindur' means red- a representation of Shakti(goddess of strength) symbolizes love. The bindi captivates the lover whom she always carries in her thoughts. Red stands for fire-fire of passion, fire that has a power to destroy-which can be seen in many legends. It symbolizes the female energy which is believed to protect women and their husbands. the part where the sindur is applied is also related to the 6th chakra - wisdom

EVOLUTION
SYMBOLS/SIGNS THAT HAVE CHANGED/EXTENDED THEIR MEANINGS

what's in a kiss?

Why do we kiss? what was the reason behind it?
Kissing has extended its meaning from caveman days to today. Some cultures, like Hindu, believe showing any kind of affection to your partner in public was a sin, thus kissing anyone was a sin. If you kissed your brother-in-law/sister-in-law, it was a adultery. Christianity seal a promise of commitment with a kiss. I came up with following theories of why we kiss:

1. the kiss as a sign of affection, between mother and child
and later, between adults: relatives, friends...etc.
2. the kiss to symbolize spiritual union between two couples/adults.
A kiss during a wedding to seal marriages in
different cultures are used to
symbolize the joining of two souls.
3. Some cultures use kissing as a form of greeting.

Well, kissing was special, i believe in ancient times, it had a meaning behind it. Now days, kisses range from small pecks on the cheeks as a greeting, to the use of the lips and tongue as a sign of passion. Thus creating different types of kisses , which even today, new ways of kissing are invented. Its different in every form, but 'a kiss is a kiss'. Its being discovered in new cultures and generations, although Indian cultures are yet to discover it.

REVOLUTION
A REVOLUTIONARY/MOVEMENT OF INTEREST CONTEXT SYMBOL THAT HAS CHANGED/REUSED TODAY OR IS MOST COMMON NOW
WEEK 6

For this week we had to research a symbol that were originally defined to certain groups/were part of a revolutionary existence/reflect certain type of people, and have changed/reused for another purpose and are common today.

I picked the Rastafari Movement as one of the revolutionary periods that influenced a lot of people. It started as a religious movement that arose in christian culture in Jamaica. It was influenced by the former emperor of Ethiopia, Haile Selassie. They had certain symbols that defined who/what they were, their religion, culture, character, personality were. As an example, the dreadlocks, the colors, the marijuana, the lion.

1. The Lion of Judah is perceived and worshiped by most Rastafarians and some Coptic Ethiopians in the form of an afrikan messiah Haile Selassie

2. The dreadlocks.
The wearing of dreadlocks is very closely associated with the movement. Rastas that maintain the locks, follow the religion that said shaving off was a bad omen, baldness did not represent holiness. Nowadays, the dreadlocks has become a famous hairstyle and are worn by people, celebs like whoopi goldberg had one. Most reggae artists are influenced by the Rastafari movement.

The colors - The Rastafarian colors of red, gold and green (sometimes also including black) are very commonly sported on Rastafari flag, badges, posters etc.

Music has long played an integral role in Rastafari, and the connection between the movement and various kinds of music has become well known, this could be due to the international fame of reggae artists such as Bob Marley.

Unfortunately, the way of life/movement today, has changed. It continues to be exploited to represent other themes. Most do not understand the symbols that have come to represent this group of people and are therefore judged.  The true rastafari live a life based on their beliefs, living a natural life.

INTANGIBLE SYMBOLS

Intangible symbols represent thoughts, ideas, concepts, memories, stories etc that came to be symbolic. For example the word 'Qualia' represents any conscious activity like the taste of wine, the feeling of headache. the word which is a latin word, and most probably means something else, has been used to represent intangible symbols. For this research, i had again the Rastfari movement. The movement developed to a religion, and latter on intagible symbols came to represent their passion and existence.
